As discussions in the “sharm” thread continue to show, many of us are giving in to frustration and a hopelessness that is insidious. But I think here we are getting so because we have the wrong conception of leadership. We expect others to lead us and then get disappointed.

Why do we get disappointed? Because we do not recognize that there is already an ideal of leadership in our minds, against which the real life ones come up as poor caricatures. We subconsciously feel what the right thing should have been to do, and then we get frustrated that the real life “leader” deviates from it.

The first task is to shed this frustration. We punish ourselves for the crime and fault of others. Let us have confidence in our own analysis and conclusions. Let us have confidence in our ability to think through and think for ourselves. Recognize that leadership exists in each of us. From there we can and should think of looking forward, long term, concrete, on a wide front of efforts. In many respects it will be like the confused, sometimes comical and sometimes tragic early lumbering nationalist awakening moving towards a mass movement. That started from similar darkness and hopelessness, where the “evil” appeared overwhelmingly strong and dominant – controlling all machineries of rashtryia power, having liquidated all viable opposition, controlling all levers of ideological control including education and media.

That was the beginning. Let us look forward towards that brilliant destiny again. All sorts of efforts are needed – cultural, spiritual as well as political, and media or communication. It is important to do whatever we can in whatever way possible to disseminate our thoughts. Many will disagree, many will oppose. But we will see a gradual turnaround as the years go by. Do not give up on our people and the coming generations. Even those now within the Congress or other existing political parties or other organizations should realize the necessity of this eventual transition, and should not resent such efforts. In the end, it will benefit even them.

I don’t find it surprising that India doesn’t even come up in any American’s mind when discussing any relevant ideas. Indians haven’t yet learned the art of media/image management. They are still stuck in the outdated ideas that media doesn’t matter. You just have to watch the American media when an Indian Statesman comes to America, to realize the helpless and mediocrity of Indian officials in getting their message out.

As a Indian citizen, I strongly disagree with the proposition that “minorities rarely serve as heads of state in any country”. In the largest democracy of the world, India, its President is a Muslim, its Prime Minister is a Sikh and most powerful politician is an Italian Catholic women. However, this will rarely be known outside India & Indians circle, because Indians haven’t mastered the art of selling themselves. They don’t know how to sell their ideas, sell their image and show their abilities to others.

I recently learned that Santa Claus was a marketing invention in 1920s and  Diamond’s demand was artificially created by media campaign beginning in 1930-40s in America. To me, this proves beyond doubt the power of engaging media and necessity of creating positive public perception about India and Hinduism in general public all over the world.

Lately, there has been lot of noise (Rediff, CSM) made by well minded people about the surge of Hinglish or Inglish (Indian English) in the Indian Metros. All you hear on TVs and Radios is combination of Hindi and English.

In addition, on Internet the English script is replacing the Hindi (Devanagri) script as the mode of communication in Indian language. It is just easier to type in English script rather than trying to figure out a way to  type in Hindi. Is this another sign of change/mutation in the use of languages? Considering there was no such thing as Hindi 50 years ago, it might be time for another change. Most of youths in India have begun to use Internet and they prefer to type in English rather than Indian script.

VHP and RSS have maintained that there is no place for Caste System in Indian society, since their inception.

In fact RSS itself is the biggest experiment in the history of Bharat to remove cast difference. How does it do that? It does it by Shakha or daily 1 hour meeting. In these meetings anybody is welcome, whatever cast they may be. Even when someone introduces themselves during Shakaha, they only use their first name to talk to each other, in order to not have difference based on one’s caste. All the people at shakha, whatever caste they may be, sit together on the same ground, eat together from same vessels, and sing together. If that is not the way to remove caste difference in society, then I don’t know if there is any other way. This same experiment is reapeated in nearly 50,000 places in Bharat and it has been going on for last 80 years.

The Hindu : Tamil Nadu / Erode News : VHP rejects `varnashrama’, seeks end to untouchability
Erode: The fifth State Hindu Resurgence Conference organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Grama Koil Poojarigal Peravai has rejected `varnashrama’ and sought an end to the practice of untouchability.

Addressing the conference at the CNC College grounds on Sunday, VHP international president Ashok Singhal said untouchability had no sanction in the Vedas and dharma sasthras. Ancient history and mythology had no record on it. Alien aggressions could have led to the practice. He called upon the heads of mutts to give `manthra deeksha’ to all without discrimination.

Mr. Singhal said the VHP was outrightly rejecting `varnashrama dharma,’ supposedly written in Manusmrithi, in the interest of consolidating Hindu unity to fight conversions and “Jehadi” terror.

Hindu American Foundation Launches Defense and Education Fund Drive – Hindu American Foundation [HAF]

The Hindu American Foundation (“HAF”) announces the start of the HAF Legal Defense and Education Fund Drive. Through the month of March, HAF asks Hindus across the U.S. and from around the world to contribute generously to enable its work at this critical juncture in Hindu American history.

The goal of the HAF Legal Defense and Education Fund Drive is to raise $200,000 by the end of March 2006 to meet mounting expenses due to HAF’s legal efforts in ensuring a fair and balanced portrayal of Hinduism in public school textbooks up for adoption in the State of California. The current textbooks accomplish little more than to perpetuate negative stereotypes and promote prejudice against Hindu Americans, despite California law prohibiting the adoption of any textbook that reflects adversely upon persons because of creed or ancestry. The final outcome of this effort is very much in doubt at this time as opponents to the Hindu effort have vast resources and influence.

HAF seeks to raise $1 million by the end of 2006 to be prepared for future legal battles involving textbooks in other states and to continue HAF’s strong track record in taking a Hindu American voice to the Supreme Court and the U.S. Congress in matters involving religious liberty and human rights and to the media in presenting fair and balanced coverage of Hinduism.

HAF has retained a law firm in California to represent the Foundation, and by extension, the Hindu American community at-large in interactions with the California State Board of Education. Proceeds from this drive will be used to support this effort, and all future HAF projects and initiatives seeking to improve textbooks and educate fellow citizens about Hinduism, its practitioners and their concerns and aspirations.

If your child is unfortunate enough to study in California, he or she will be taught Islam is a fountain of modernity, liberty, and feminism. More importantly, he will be taught every aspect of the Islamic faith is historically accurate.

The Houghton-Mifflin textbook, currently in use in many schools, lists one Shabbir Mansuri, Founding Director of Council on Islamic Education, as its consultant. Mansuri is a businessman with a degree in chemical engineering, and not an academic. That did not prevent the California State Board of Education (SBE) from inviting Mansuri to a closed-door meeting, apparently to advise the board on Hindu edits, on January 6, 2006.

If you use Windows XP, use Internet Explorer (not Firefox) and visit Prarthana and you should be able to see the text in Sanskrit without downloading any font. Isn’t it awesome?? You didn’t have to download any font. The font needed for this web site comes built in Windows XP!

We create many resources in Devanagari script (Hindi, Marathi, Gujrati, Sanskrit etc …). However, we use so many different fonts, which breeds incompatibility. Additionally, at present everybody has to download some kind of fonts for each file or each user that sends them text in Devanagari script. However there is a solution to all this mess and it is called Unicode. Visit the linked web site for complete technical details.

What is Unicode? and how does it solves this problem?

Unicode format allows seamless use of any script in your computer. If someone uses Unicode encoding to type in Devanagari script, all you need is any font which has the Devanagari Unicode character support. Windows XP already has this font called “Mangal”. This is much like if someone types “Abhimanyu” using a font called Kid, and even if you don’t have the same font, you can still see the text using Times New Roman. Unicode enables precisely same thing for Devanagari script and countless others.

How do I begin to use other softwares to view and write the Unicode Devanagari?

Step 1: You need to install Complex Script support on your windows operating system.

1.1 Locate Regional and Language Options setting in the Control Panel.

1.2 After launching the “Regional and Language Options” link from the Control Panel, select the Language tab. Enable the option “Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages” and click OK.

1.3 You may be asked to insert the Windows Installation CD to complete the installation.

1.4 Download the Hindi Language Keyboard file. Follow the directions inside the file to begin using typing in the Devanagari Script.

Many Hindu American parents have been dismayed by the negative and caricaturist description of our heritage that our school children in the United States are subjected to. A few Hindu organizations such as the Hindu Education Foundation (HEF) and the Vedic Foundation (VF), as well as many individual Hindus, have been working with the California Department of Education (CDE) to end the derogatory and discriminatory portrayal of Hinduism in textbooks.

Other ancient traditions such as Jainism are also ignored in textbooks. HEF has received letters of support from Jain groups, as well as Hindu American organizations representing immigrants from Nepal and the Carribbean. More than 100 world-class scholars of archaeology, history and academic study of religion have written to CDE in support of HEF/VF efforts.
A group of academics led by Professor Michael Witzel of Harvard, has been opposing these reasonable changes. Interestingly, Witzel’s group admitted that they were unaware of the nature of the proposed changes when they wrote their protest letter to CDE on November 7, 2005′.

Who are they, and why did they oppose the changes? Steve Farmer, a non specialist who does not understand a single Indic language or genre of texts, initiated Witzel’s petition, on which many Marxist ideologues signed. It seems that Michael Witzel, who sent the petition on behalf its signatories, has called Hindus immigrant to the USA, “lost or abandoned people.” Reports also indicate that he has made fun of the most sacred Hindu chants such as “Om.” Witzel indulged in clandestine activism, and urged his cosignatories to mobilize opposition to the Hindu initiative through fringe ultra-left Indian or South Asian groups in the United States.

Lars Martin Fosse, a cosignatory on Witzel’s petition and writing on behalf of Witzel’s petitioners, appealed to fundamentalist Christian missionaries and alleged Khalistanis to mobilize volunteers to oppose the Hindu initiative. Sikhs, who are a peace-loving, hard-working and enterprising community, have been rightly upset that textbooks that deal with medieval history ignore Sikhism.

During their subsequent intervention at the CDE, Witzel’s group argued that proposed HEF/VF correction that ‘Ramayana was composed before Mahabharata’ (the textbook said the opposite) should be rejected because ‘how does a 6th grader care which text was written first’!

When Hindu groups proposed replacing a textbook picture erroneously showing a bearded man with a skullcap with the caption ‘Brahmin’, Witzel’s group proposed that the picture should be replaced with that of an untouchable scavenger! When HEF/VF proposed that ahistorical pictures of members of the four castes should be replaced with more accurate drawings, Witzel wrote that the existing pictures were no worse than those found in the ‘Amar Chitra Katha’!

Whereas the descriptions of other religious traditions in the textbooks do not say anything about unequal treatment of slaves and women therein, Witzel wants to single out Hinduism and India for such negative treatment.

Predictably, the Witzel group has received strong support from Indian communists who have always borne an animus for Hindus. The very first articles by Nalini Taneja favoring his stance came out in the online newspaper of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Further articles by Anjana Chatterjee, an Indian leftist in United States, appeared in some Leftist online magazines, as did articles by Vijay Prasad, founder of the Forum of Inquilabi Leftists (FOIL).

The online blitz was carried out by FOSA (‘Friends of South Asia’), a front of FOIL. These articles did not have much academic or substantive content, and indulged in reckless calumny by association, even insinuating that the HEF and VF were somehow linked to the murder of 1000 Muslims in Gujarat! Prasad’s article even had the conspiracy theory argument that the edits proposed by Hindu groups wanted to make India look good so that the country could attract more foreign investment.

There were shrill and abrasive appeals for campaigns against HEF/VF on lists of Indian communists residing in the US, followed by letter writing to Indian American newspapers. Surprisingly, FOSA did not attack edits of the Islamic community, as if Islam is not a ‘South Asian’ religion practiced in South Asia. These articles alleged that HEF/VF were male chauvinist, forgetting that a good chunk of the advisors and coordinators of these organizations were women.

All kinds of abuses in their standard lexicon (‘fascists’, casteists, Hindu nationalists, Nazis etc.) were hurled without any attempt to understand the issues academically. Another conspiracy theory stated by Leftists was that HEF/VF wanted to exclude the Aryan Invasion

Theory from textbooks because they wanted to declare that Hinduism alone is indigenous to India and all other faiths are foreign!

These same people argue that Hinduism was constructed in 19th century by the British. How is it possible simultaneously that Aryans brought Hinduism into India in 1500 BCE, and then the British invented Hinduism out of nothing 3000 years later?

A new twist in this controversy is the recent involvement of ‘Dalit’ groups, who showed up in strength at the Board office in Sacramento on January 12, 2006. They protested the edit that asked for exclusion of the word ‘Dalit’ from one of the eight textbooks. It seems that ‘Dalit’ word means “broken/oppressed” which might have a demeaning impact on any student of referred castes. The word ‘Dalit’ is being used only after 1950s that too mainly in one section of India while word ‘Harijan’ was most commonly used by Mahatma Gandhi in 20th century. Even Kabir used the same word few hundred of years back.

In modern India, the Government of India uses “scheduled caste” while popular political party covering these castes uses “Bahujan Samaj”. Most importantly, the textbooks dealt with Hinduism and India before 600 AD, in this ancient period, untouchability was anyway a rare phenomenon according to standard scholarly works.

Moreover, ancient Buddhist texts also seemed to include similar treatment of Chandalas in ancient India, and true egalitarianism was absent in other religions as well. Therefore it was unfair to single out Hinduism. However, Witzel group and the Indian American Leftists played the ‘Dalit’ card, further muddying the situation to no one’s benefit. Some reports indicate that many of the participants who showed up at the Board meeting might not be Hindu Dalits.

Lastly, some members of the Indian Muslim community (such as Khalid Azam of the Indian Muslim Council) have stepped in the fray although Islam was not present in ancient India. They justify their role on the pretext that they are supporting Dalits, and because they are concerned at the ‘Hindutva’ nature of the edits proposed by HEF/VF. Needless to say, their participation is only vitiating the relationships between Hindus and Muslims in the United States.

The reality is that HEF/VF have only one concern, that impressionable sixth-grade school-going children of CA can use factually and historically accurate education materials that also conform to the CA State Law [Education Code 60044(a) and Subsection (b)], the “Standards for Evaluating Instructional Materials for Social Content (2000 Edition):

“1. Adverse Reflection. No religious belief or practice may be held up to ridicule and no religious group may be portrayed as inferior.”
2. Indoctrination. Any explanation or description of a religious belief or practice should be present in a manner that does not encourage or discourage belief or indoctrinate the student in any particular religious belief.”

How will an excessively negative presentation of India and Hinduism help any student? It could only hinder the psychological development of Indian American and Hindu American children because their classmates will not help notice that only Hinduism has been depicted negatively and other faiths have been not. So Hindu parents appealed to various parties opposed to these edits to consider the welfare of little children, and not make them the battleground of their divisive politics imported from India.

In contrast to Hindu changes, the 500 changes of the Jewish community and a hundred changes proposed by the Muslims were accepted in toto by everyone without a single protest. But as many as 58 of the modest 95 odd Hindu group proposed edits were opposed by the same people. Why? Are Hindus children of a lesser ‘god’? Why is that that ’scholars’ who have never acted constructively in improving the coverage of India and Hinduism in textbooks are now trying to ‘foil’ constructive maiden attempts by HEF/VF? How come anti-Hinduism is common in all these groups?

This software is basically a glorified group chat. Just like group chat, multiple people (upto 14 in this case) will be able to work on a Notepad style windows simultaneously. This means you could see upto 14 people editing a Notepad file at the same time. Ofcourse, each user’s text is color coded to differenciate between different users.

Some potentioal uses scenario during a conference:

• As people think of things they want to talk about, they list it in MoonEdit
• As side-discussion comes up, you table it on MoonEdit for getting back to.
• When someone’s in the middle of explaining something, and you get a question, you table that as well.
• As you talk about things, you note it as a summary point on MoonEdit

When you’re all done, you have a nice summary of everything you talked about, already made.

The OneNote software from Microsoft offers same functionality, but it is better since you can add images, colored text, choose different fonts etc. However, it costs big money
